Traveling Local: Wherever You Are

People are living their best lives despite limitations during the pandemic. Not much has changed the past few weeks. I still have the constant travel bug knocking daily in my brain. Sometimes I feel an envious twinge knowing some have placed caution to the wind in their getaways. But, most continue playing it safe wearing face coverings and keeping social distance. It has become an everyday reality for all ages.

Funny how “finding yourself” as an adult is merely getting back to who you were and what you loved as a child. I’m always photographing those unfolding moments that disappear in a blink. In this way, I will create new stories that will be shared later.

Exploring and appreciating local destinations keeps the reality of travel alive. I think of this as a staycation. Taking scenic road trips has gained popularity, whether your home is in or outside the United States. If you know people who want to share expenses and spend time together, there are many budget-wise choices.

Being economical with time off doesn’t have to be complicated. Take a walk through new neighborhoods viewing local graffiti as a gallery, pop into a local diner for a quick bite, enjoy wine tastings with vineyards vistas. In the evening, stroll on a university campus, take a yoga class in a park, or sign up for a Zoom cooking class from favorite online chefs.

Support of community business, whether traveling locally or having an international experience, is essential. My travel plan may include country Bed & Breakfasts, VRBOs, and small hotels living on the East Coast. These destinations have gained popularity for short stays assisting the hospitality industry. Fall activities like shopping at farmer’s markets, going to the local pumpkin patch or apple orchard, even kayaking in more remote locales can place you in touch with the great outdoors.

I hope you’ll create your own local getaway experience keeping the dream alive for future long-distant travel possibilities. Remember, traveling alone isn’t any lonelier than being home alone. For a long-distance destination, take a look up to the stars on a bright night. You may see Mars playing with the Moon!
